The symbolism in dreams

Category: Let's talk

This is not another scary dreams topic, nor does it necessarily have to be strange, nor even prophetic though it can be.
The point of this topic is: Can we interpret the psychological (or psychic, for those with such inclinations) symbolism in dreams?
My experience has been mostly frightening. I have had quite a few prophetic dreams, and I'm still waiting for the day when one of those will be good. The experience that prompted me to create this topic, which might make its purpose clearer, is this:
I have a recurring nightmare about these big, rambling houses, which funnily enough change style and building material completely from room to room (one minute a sort of rock-and-glass, natural/unnatural design (the lines are natural, it could be a water-carved cave)) to the sort of rickety old stairs and halls of a haunted house, to extravagant mansion halls, to little cottage rooms with sweet little garden views and birdies in the window. If I wander around long enough, the building will merge in to schools, malls, stores, meeting centers/whatever, stadiums, libraries, museums, unnameable places filled with unnameable things--you name it. They're usually all empty (or something, key word, is quickly approaching) or they contain eerily dysfunctional, abnormal situations. Now scary as the last bit of that has a chance to become, here's what (for some reason) truly terrifies me.
When I go in to the basement (and the entrance is anywhere, it moves2 finding it is inevitable), I will always find that "corner staircase", where you step up and turn and the stairway's entrance is in the corner. The stairway however is open, so you could sort of fall in if you pitched over the railing. It's generally got these fragile white metal rails that are always cold, it's very steep (treacherously so, nearly like a ship's ladder but more open) and made of some spongy white material. There's a morbid fascination that focuses around this staircase because it seems like it leads to an unspeakable, unimaginable dark evil. I've always had the eerie feeling that it's symbolic somehow.
So the topic's basically for people with symbolic dream experiences, suggestions, comments, questions and random thoughts on it.

I'm so glad somebody finally posted a topic like this. I've always believed that dreams mean something, no matter how small, or whether or not you realize it at the time. My experiences would take up way more space than this board will allow, so I'll just say that I have a lot of dreams, some good, some bad, and some just plain weird, but I always end up looking, and usually finding, the symbolism in it.

I've never really been a good dream interpretor though I wish I could learn how to be. I've never had the gift of profacy, though my mother does. She's not a Hellenic Polytheist, but has met a being whom she strongly believes to be Zeus, on several occasions. He also hit her with lightening at least two times in real life. In any case, when she sees Him, it's almost never about something good. As for your dream, Feathery, my guess is that it means that you want to do alot of things but you're afraid of the unknown.

I use to have recurring dreams of either missing or not being able to get on a train.

it is said that dreams about trains have to do with sex, but I'm not sure about it. speaking completely off the cuff it sounds to me like your dream is saying that you feel lonely and overwhelmed by the choices you have to make in life. the steps down in to the darkness have to do with something you must face. that's all i have to say.

yes, I've had dreams that have hprophesied the future. If you want to find out what the dream means, before you go to sleep, say I wan to dream this dream and change the ending. Often you can do just that. It is interesting to keep a dream journal. this can show us the patterns in our night life.

Here is The most amazing dream i ever had in my life. It totally changed how i deal with my world.

Back in march of 1994, I was hospitalized for pneumonia. The night I was admitted, I went to sleep. Suddenly, I realized I was in this big room. There were all these guys sitting around on tall stools drinking coffee, eating danishes, talking, and laughing. The room was filled with big huge map files. I could see what was happening but they didn't know I was there. They were all little short dudes with beards and pointed shoes and robes. Anyway, this big guy with huge muscles and a bunch of keys comes in and says "hey joe. get off your ass and get the T book." "oh darn it," says the guy who must be joe, "I already had to get that one out today." "well, I can't help it. You got to put an entry in it. I can't help it if another t person kicked the bucket." So the shoertest fattest guy gets up and schlumps over to one of the map files. He yanks open the drawer and there is this huge book. It looks like an old fashioned family bible but way huger. On the edge of the pages is gilding and all kinds of scroll work with flowers and beasts and angels. Joe says what's the name? "holly Turri." Ok So i see him fleipping through the thomases and turpacks and finally to turri debbie, my sister in law and then here is my name. "ok, I got it. what does the boss want me to write." "put too short poor plot development stupid ending." Then I woke up in a cold sweat.

Wow Holly, that's deep.
I agree with both Holly and Tiffanitza's interpretations of the dream.
I never usually relate much, if any symbolism to my dreams unless they are recurring, or some detail about them is recurring, such as location or the presence of a certain person or object.
In psychology, I learned that some psychologists believe that dreams are created by random firings of neurons or something by the brain. The brain takes events that have happened in the past or that day and twists them up. I didn't know whether to agree with this or not, so I decided to keep a dream journal. I've found that most of my dreams deal with something that happened that day, someone I talked to, a story someone told to me, thoughts that I've been having a lot lately, or a place or person that I miss.
So I decided to partially agree with this theory.

A lot of times, just before I'm about to go on a really big trip, or about to take part in a really important event, I have these dreams where everything that I could do wrong, I do. Like...for example, I don't pack up until the last minute, and I forget something vital, and then I'm late to whatever it is, and if it's something that involves memorization, I forget it all just when I need it the most. As much as those dreams freak me out, I'd like to think my mind is reminding me to make sure I have my priorities in order.

dreams, hmm, they do mean something, but, at least, this is what i think, you can't inturprate them on your own, ecause you might think one thing, but not have that one thing be true, so,

and iyana, i was wondering how long it'd take u to change your name to feathery, lol

I don't know if it is as much about interpreting dreams is it is about getting whatever message you can out of them. You might as well learn something from every weird, angering, saddening, disappointing, and wonderful experience you have, even if it is only a dream.

Chippie, I think your dream might have to do with having this opportunity or chance in your life that you miss. Check out what you're thinking or remembering, or what's happening, in I'd say a week before and a week after you have those dreams, its symbolism might come clearer.
That happens to me a lot too. I was going to a friend's house one weekend when I was staying in the dorm, and the night before I had a dream that I got on the bus naked and left absolutely everything in the dorm room! lol
I have dreams that I can play piano like Jordan Rudess too, damn I wish that would happen.
Ever since I was tiny the white steps leading down in to the cold (it's not always dark, but always cold, strange-smelling and very very white), have shown up in dreams, random thoughts, or will literally intrude upon a daydream and force themselves in to my thoughts and I can't get them out for a long time.
